JazzDeck Classroom Tutorial: 4 Chapters

JazzDeck Web Demo

There is a lot more to JazzDeck™. But this is enough to get you started. Good luck and thanks for supporting.

Chapter Time Code: 1. 0:33 Arpeggios: Measured and Full Range 2. 4:30 Chromatic Slips Through Minor Thirds 3. 7:03 Voice Leading: Full Ensemble 4. 8:37 Putting It All Together: Structured Improvisation VIDEO SUMMARY: Teaching the theoretical fundamentals of improvisation to a large ensemble without sacrificing student playing time is one of the biggest challenges music teachers are faced with. This video models teaching a 2-5-1 on "Take the A Train" to a group of mixed instruments. Watch as students are guided through chord tone arpeggios, decisive chromaticism, proper voice leading and they put it all together during structured improvisation. Teachers are provided with examples of clear verbal directions and suggestions for further creative classroom implementation. I am excited to learn how teachers expand on these methods with their own ensembles. REd Card (Minor Chord) Run THrough Minor Thirds Improvisation Lesson:

Every note in this clip - from the intro bit to the outro bit - is from the G minor seven card. No extra tones. Yes, I do play some chromatics, but the approach explained in the video. Apply these concepts to EVERY red card. Good luck! And thanks for watching! More to come...

Piano For Everyone:

This short video shows you how to start playing jazz piano immediately with JazzDeck. There are a lot of great jazz piano books out there. But if your theory isn't already pretty strong, it can be tough to make your way through them. This video demonstrates the way JazzDeck shows you exactly what notes to play so you can do just that…. PLAY!

HS Freshman, Aaron Kranzler, Plays Great Solo Written w/ JazzDeck:

Freshman, Aaron Kranzler, used JazzDeck to help him write a fantastic solo over the changes to "I'll Remember April." He started with one card and explored musical ideas using the color-coded suggested notes. Once he came up with something he like, he jotted it down and then worked on a smooth transition into the next chord / card. Then he proceeded to explore more ideas. Lather, rinse, repeat. Important to note: EVERY SINGLE NOTE PLAYED DURING THIS SOLO WAS DERIVED FROM JAZZDECK, USING ONLY THE COLOR CODED NOTES AND IDEAS FROM THE "NOTES TO THE MUSICIAN" SECTION OF THE YELLOW INSTRUCTION CARD.

MODES LESSON, JAzzdeck:

Watch how JazzDeck and the combination of cards, color and pattern can help students understand the concept of modes. Many of the teachers who I demoed this for at the NextGen Monterey Jazz Festival loved this element of JazzDeck and plan on incorporating it into lessons in their classrooms. Stay tuned for Part 2, "Demystifying the Minor ii-V-i."

GREEN CARD (DOMINANT CHORD) JAZZ IMPROVISATION LESSON:

Learn how to play over dominant chords with the help of JazzDeck. This video first provides several ideas on how to comfortably navigate the notes in a given chord and then models ways to practice resolving to chord tones when moving away from a dominant chord. When a piano player moves from one chord and then another, each finger grabs the closest note in the next chord. Practice moving to the closest chord tone of the next chord and learn to hear proper voice leading. This is the basis for the model of the exercises demonstrated in this video.  Good luck!
